Magdalo Party-list Representative Gary Alejano urged anew the government to adopt a holistic approach in solving the widespread drug problem in the country.
“Currently, there is a problem-solution mismatch with regard to the drug problem because this is not only an issue of drugs and criminality. The administration’s approach has been proven to be ineffective. Even the President clearly admitted that he cannot control it,” said Alejano.
Alejano reiterated his call in response to the President’s admission that he cannot control drugs even after ordering the killing of the suspects. During a speech at the PDP-Laban campaign rally in Malabon, President Duterte also mentioned the influx of supply of drugs seized by the authorities.
“Not only the drug war is anti-poor, but is also against our human right to due process. Kung small-time drug users at pushers lamang ang hinahabol ng gobyerno, talagang hindi matatapos ang problemang ito. Kung talagang determined tayo na maubos ang droga sa bansa, logical sabihin na ang puputulin natin ay ang mismong pinagmumulan nito,” Alejano said.
In closing, the Magdalo solon presented alternative solutions to counter the drug problem.
“We can adopt policies to rehabilitate drug users in the country. In fact, in the Lower House, I have filed resolutions to study this ongoing drug campaign and bills which aim to institute rehabilitation centers in every region of the country and to enact substance abuse resistance education program for the youth. At the same time, as we improve our justice system, we must penalize those who continuously poison our youth and our lands. One must not claim to be anti-narcotics advocate if he or she befriends and sets big-time drug lords free,” Alejano concluded.
