A senatorial candidate urged the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to ensure the full implementation of the law establishing polling precincts accessible to persons with disabilities and senior citizens.
“Huwag nating pahirapan ang mga kapatid nating PWDs at senior citizen sa kanilang pagboto,” said election lawyer and Otso Diretso senatorial candidate Romulo Macalintal, a known advocate for welfare of senior citizens and PWDs.
In past elections, Macalintal said the Comelec failed to ensure that PWDs and senior citizens have accessible polling places, as directed by Republic Act 10366, which mandates the poll body to put up accessible precincts for PWDs and senior citizens.
“Tuwing halalan na lang, palagi na nating nakikita ang mga problemang ito na dahilan kung bakit marami sa ating mga kasamang PWD at senior citizen ay hindi magamit ang kanilang karapatang mamili ng susunod na lider,” Macalintal stressed.
“Gawin nating mas madali para sa kanila ang pagboto, gaya nang itinatakda ng ating batas,” he added.
Even before declaring his candidacy for senator, Macalintal has been already been pushing for the welfare and rights of senior citizens and persons with disabilities.
As a senior citizen himself, Macalintal is actively pushing for senior citizens’ 20-percent discount in restaurants and other establishments.
In the past, Macalintal has filed cases against several well-known establishments which are refusing to give the proper discounts to senior citizens.
