After the success of Wednesday’s ThisIs8 thanksgiving concert – held mainly at UP Sunken Garden, with pocket satellite events in Iloilo, Cebu, and Baguio – Otso Diretso volunteers are leading a nationwide candle-lighting for “Honesty sa gobyerno” tonight, from 6pm to 9pm.
“Tuloy-tuloy ang todo-todo nating pagsusulong sa Otso Diretso. Ibang klase talaga ang response sa ground. Ready to win na kami,” said Maanne Adorna, one of the organizers of Solid Batangas, among the larger allied volunteer groups of Otso Diretso. “Nagre-resonate ang message natin, and with recent statements of solidarity from the Church, that message is affirmed. Ang botong maka-Diyos ay boto para sa honesty,” she said.
The entire Otso Diretso slate of Gary Alejano, Bam Aquino, Chel Diokno, Samira Gutoc, Pilo Hilbay, MacaRomy Macalintal, Mar Roxas, and Erin Tañada is part of the slate endorsed by the lay Christian “People’s Choice Movement.” Catholic leaders have been actively urging parishioners to ensure that their vote reflects Church values.
Jericho Salazar, a youth volunteer, sees the candle-lighting as the best way to carry Otso Diretso’s campaign through the last crucial days of the election season. “The Otso Diretso community has been blessed with the strongest, most passionate volunteers, fighting for the chance to have a better country and future,” he said. “Wala na po kaming pwedeng hingiin pa kundi ‘yung maenlighten ang bayan, maalala nila ang mensahe nung mga volunteers na nakausap nila, at bumoto sila para sa honesty sa darating na Lunes.”
Crowds will gather in Quezon City (People Power Monument, EDSA; Jamboree Circle, Timog Ave.; and Liberal Party National Headquarters, Cubao), Marikina City (Honesty Run endpoint near Clock Tower, Marikina Sports Complex), Cavite (St. Gregory The Great Parish, Indang), Batangas (Lipa Cathedral, Lipa), Bulacan (in front of Barasoain Church, Malolos), Cagayan de Oro City (beside St. Augustine’s Cathedral), Davao (Ma-a, Davao City), and Compostela Valley (Sto. Niño Parish Church, Mabini).
More communities are expected to organize their own simultaneous candle-lighting efforts. Updates to the candle-lighting event will be posted on the official Facebook event page at https://www.facebook.com/events/2171014753019805/.
