“These killings have to stop. This government should start giving value to life and justice especially to our farmers and their families. When the government is remiss of its duty to relieve them of prevalent hunger and poverty, killing them in the guise of criminality appears to be the next recourse for this administration.”

This was the statement of senatorial bet Lorenzo ‘Erin’ Tañada on the reported death of 14 people in an alleged anti-criminality campaign in Negros Oriental yesterday.

“I condemn the killings of farmers in Negros Oriental in the guise of an anti-criminality campaign. The government is already pushing the farmers more in to poverty with the Rice Tariffication Law. They don’t get the necessary support to improve their income. They are left to fend for themselves when their crops are severely damaged by typhoons, flooding and now drought. Now they are killing them. When will the government give farmers the respect for life and justice they deserve?” according to former Deputy Speaker Tañada.
